A bedbug epidemic forced Ellie Maldonado, 42, to discard her mattress last year. Now, her brother Marcos Maldonado is spearheading an effort to raise money to replace the infected mattresses of his Astoria neighbors.
Rep. G. K. Butterfield has sponsored the "Dont Let the Bed Bugs Bite Act of 2008," which would establish a grant program so states can establish inspection, prevention and eradication of the blood sucking pests.
A complaint about dirty mattresses on the sidewalk turned into chaos when Fox 5's John Deutzman went to check things out. Along the way, he says he learned some creepy things about bedbugs, old mattresses and how sensitive people in the controversial used mattress business can be.
